Kennedy John Victor, better known by his stage name Vikram, is a Tamil actor and playback singer. Along with Tamil cinema, he has also appeared in Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema. He is among the most decorated Tamil actors, with awards including seven Filmfare Awards South, a National Film Award, and a Tamil Nadu State Film Award.
Amongst his other honors include the ‘Kalaimamani Award’ from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2004 and an honorary doctorate by the popular University of Milan in 2011. Based on the earnings of Indian celebrities, he was included in the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list for 2016 and 2018. Vikram has done a variety of roles in films. He is one of the prolific actors of Tamil cinema.
In 1990, Vikram made his debut in the film En Kadhal Kanmani. His successful career as an actor started with the 1999 film Sethu. In the film, he appeared as a rogue turned lover. His movie Ravanam, directed by Manirathnam, became the first Indian film to be dubbed in Germany.
Apart from acting, Vikram has been a part of the film-making process with credits as playback singer and assistant director. In the year 2000, he and actress Meens launched a pop album ‘Kadhalism’. Following the success of Bharathwaj’s music for Vikram’s 2002 film Gemini, Vikram sang a version of the hit song ‘O Podu!’ for the extended version of the film.
In 2011, the actor promoted various social causes and appeared as the Youth Envoy for the United Nations Settlements Programme. He has been a brand ambassador of Sanjeevani Trust. He runs his own welfare association, the Vikram Foundation. In 2016, Vikram produced and directed the video to the flood relief anthem, Spirit of Chennai, as a tribute to the city’s volunteers following the 2015 South Indian floods.
The actor is married to Shailaja from Kerala where he was in crutches following three years of being bed-ridden. The duo got married in Guruvayoor. They had a wedding ceremony in a church near Loyola College. He had got his English degree from the same college.
