This upcoming summer, your wardrobe needs a nostalgic twist with early 2000s chic fashion: The Y2K fashion. Fashion is ever-changing and evolving. New trends come in style for a while or popular old fashion trends make a comeback. As Audrey Hepburn once famously quoted, “Life is a party – dress like it.”, which is now truly being embraced by the youth with one of the most influential fashion styles coming back in the spotlight.
Y2K is a short-term for the year 2000. Y2K fashion is the early 2000s fashion that inspired the whole western world’s 90s teenager’s wardrobe. This fashion came into the spotlight due to America’s music industry where their famous singers and popstars wore low-rise jeans, corset tops, khaki shorts, and flashy belts. It took the whole world by storm and was a defining moment in the fashion world.
The Fashion Inspo
This type of fashion was highly dominated by women in the pop culture of Hollywood like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton, and Destiny’s child. The western world was swept with this style. This fashion was predominantly known for its sparkle, glitter, and pink clothes. Velvet cloth tracksuits, low-waisted jeans, spiky hair, designer logo bags, chains, and t-shirt were in.
This fashion was considered to be futuristic as the world was entering into 21st century and 2000 was considered a revolutionary technological year. Not only was this fashion ruled by all the girl teen idols and pop stars, but it was also influenced by iconic teen-drama cliché movies like Clueless, Legally Blonde, and Mean Girls. “On Wednesdays, we wear pink”, this iconic line from Mean Girls and the pink fashion with glittery logo t-shirt of luxury brands, the hairclips, and the bracelet sets used in the movie became a big hit amongst the young teens.
Y2K Style Pallette
It was also remarkable for its very unique and odd hairstyles and glasses. The spiked hair looked like a porcupine, very low waist jeans with baggy chains on them, and translucent net undershirts. The low-rise bottoms and midriffs were in and the 90s high-waisted mom jeans were out of fashion. The fashion accessories of Y2K fashion included huge rings, velour tracksuits, bandanas, butterfly hairclips, and overall outfits in hues of pink and purple with a huge belt. It was considered to be a fashion statement for embracing the femineity and glamourous fashion consumer behavior.
Normally, any fashion style does not come back this quickly and become trending. However, the pandemic has been a very big contributing factor to popularise this again. With the Gen-Z being stuck at home and binge-watching old shows and cult movies of iconic 90s and 2000s shows and movies, they were hit with the nostalgia of Y2K fashion and decided to embrace it. Social media and the internet helped in digging back all the iconic outfits and accessories worn during the early 2000s.
Not only was this fashion ruled by all the girl teen idols and pop stars, but it was also influenced by iconic teen drama cliché movies like Clueless, Legally Blonde, and Mean Girls. “On Wednesdays, we wear pink”, this iconic line from Mean Girls and the pink fashion with glittery logo t-shirt of luxury brands, the hairclips, and the bracelet sets used in the movie became a big hit amongst the young teens. This comeback also comes at the right time where the youth is busy canceling all fast fashion brands and have decided to shit to more sustainable fashion and thrifting. Thrifting has become very popular since last year which has helped in increasing the demand for second-hand, sustainable, and affordable fashion. Thrifting has led to more sales of clothes of early 2000s style and has given more easy access to Y2K inspired summer wardrobe 2021.
Y2K enters India
In India, this fashion style was not adopted by everyone in the 2000s. However, it was fully embraced by Bollywood. This fashion was considered to be luxurious, obnoxious with lots of glitter and glam. This acted as a perfect catalyst for Karan Johar’s film Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham released in the early 2000s. Kareena Kapoor’s character in the movie ‘POO’ is the most influential character for young gen-z and it is the earliest example of Y2K fashion seen in India on a big screen. Now, due to social media and more consumerism behavior and the new wave of social media fashion content creators, influencers and celebrities have started wearing and embracing the Y2K fashion which has boosted the 2000s inspired clothing’s sale to be on an all-time high. The fashion which was predominant in the western world is now also embraced in the Eastern part of the world.
Some millennials are, however, still scared to embrace the low-waist pants and sparkly accessories. Though fashion is a personal choice and people can dress however they want to, Y2K fashion styles and accessories are something to look out for this summer. Fashion trends keep changing but this fashion is predicted to stay here. Y2K was heavily influenced by the new and upcoming technology in the 2000s and it tried to match the outfits and accessories with their flip phones and bags.
So naturally, in 2021 where the whole gen-z is glued to their phones and uses social media as a platform to express themselves and their fashion, Y2K fashion is the best to embrace and show off. Y2K is over the top, glamorous, and shinier which is a huge shift from the last decade which was more monotone and simple dull tones. This is more flashy and more colorful which is very much needed in this pandemic that has already darkened our lives.
